Zuid I Eerste Klasse 1947/48
The second district championship was a tenser affair than
the first, but that's nothing compared to the subsequent
playoff for the Dutch title! In a fight on life and death
with Abe Lenstra's Heerenveen, also looking for their first
ever national title, B.V.V. clinch the championship with
a draw at E.D.O. in the last match, helped by a defeat of
Heerenveen in Deventer a week before. Lenstra scored no
fewer than 13 goals in the national playoff, but it's not
enough - B.V.V.'s superior defense sees them through.
Below, the day-by-day battle is followed in detail; B.V.V.
started extremely well, conceding their first goal when 2-0
ahead at P.S.V. in their fourth match, and win a big match
at home to Go Ahead after falling 1-2 behind, to destroy
the Eastern champions 5-2.
After that resounding victory, however, the machine comes
unstuck, and a narrow loss at Heerenveen is followed by a
0-2 loss at bottom team Haarlem. When in the next match
B.V.V. fall 0-2 behind against the same team at home, all
looks lost, but our heroes rally to win the match 3-2.
This is followed by a convincing 3-1 home win over only
rivals Heerenveen, and B.V.V. are back in the driving seat.
When the Northern champions falter in Deventer, an away draw
at the second Haarlem team is all that is needed, and this
draw is achieved (after going up 1-0). The Dutch title
goes to 's-Hertogenbosch!
