Alpenpokal 1941-1942

Tournament held on two occasions between clubs from Austria and Bavaria during World War II (when Austria was part of the Deutsches Reich). The Austrian clubs played against the Bavarian clubs but not against each other (and neither did the Bavarian clubs). In both tournaments, all Austrian clubs finished with a positive record while no Bavarian club managed to do so.

The first edition was organised following discussions between leading representatives of Austrian and Bavarian football to deepen their relationship, which found the full support of the Reich's sports leader Hans von Tschammer und Osten. Thus, after the regional German championships were finished the five leading teams behind the champions of Bavaria (TSV 1860 München) and Austria (SK Rapid Wien, who went on to win the German Championship) played against each other in the format described above.
The two regions received points for the final ranks of their representatives, with first place worth 10 points, second place 9, and so on; as Austrians club finished first to fifth, they won this particular ranking with 40 points against Bavaria's 15.
The winning club received the Alpenpreis donated by the regional political leaders Wagner and Baldur von Schirach, and its players a week's holiday with their families. The players from First Vienna FC chose to spend their week in Kiefersfelden near Kufstein.

After the war a similar tournament was apparently started in 1958 but abandoned after a few matches due to meagre attendances, apparently caused by the superiority of the Austrian sides. Instead the Cup of the Alps involving Italian and Swiss clubs was started in 1960 and gradually extended to clubs from France and (West) Germany (with clubs from mountainous regions such as Bretagne and the Ruhrgebiet winning it) but never to clubs from Austria.
