Budweiser Challenge Cup 1990

These games were arranged as part of a proposed scheme to reinstate a
nationwide professional outdoor league in the US. The USSF had just
appointed a development committee, including representatives of various
professional indoor and outdoor leagues. Arguably the most prominent
professional league (outdoor or indoor) in the country at the time was
the Major Soccer League (formerly the Major Indoor Soccer League, the
name having been changed to indicate a potential expansion to outdoor
play for at least part of the season). Two outdoor games were arranged
between the US national team (without its European-based players) and a
selection of the best players from the Major Soccer League. The MSL
selection was a team whose players had not played together before, were
not at full fitness (as the MSL was in the off-season), and were
conditioned to playing in smaller indoor arenas.
