Coupe Vanden Abeele

Introduction

In February 1901, the "Comité voor den beker-Vanden Abeele" invited a Dutch eleven to travel to Antwerp to contest the Coupe Vanden Abeele, offered by Frédéric "Frits" Vanden Abeele, against an All-Belgium side during the Easter holiday.
However, the Easter weekend was already planned for the second edition of the Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz in Brussels, so in the end the match was moved by three weeks. As many Dutch clubs had league commitments on the new date, the visitors were eventually represented by Rotterdam club side Celeritas, from the Western Tweede Klasse B, one of the so-called "lower second classes" and de facto a third level competition; they were strengthened by three players from another Rotterdam club, Olympia, from the Western Tweede Klasse D, also effectively a third level side.
Unsurprisingly, the hosts, whose team was referred to as an All-Belgium XI and included four Englishmen resident in Belgium, had little trouble to claim the trophy, which soon became known as het koperen dingetje, "the copper thingy", in the Netherlands, where its design was not universally admired. (Occasionally this feeling was expressed more strongly by calling the prize het koperen vod.)

The next three editions saw the Dutch represented by sides selected by Kees van Hasselt, a former Sparta player, first an eleven from clubs from Rotterdam and The Hague, the two largest cities in the province of Zuid-Holland and thus tagged Zuidhollandsch Elftal, and then twice under the name of Van Hasselt XI, both times closely resembling the best the Netherlands could offer on a football field. But while the visitors did not (quite) field their best possible national side, the hosts were no national side (in the modern sense) at all: in each of the first four matches, they included Beerschot's English star centre forward Herbert Potts, who scored 12 of "Belgium's" 17 goals. They really were a Belgian League XI.

In 1905 the N.V.B. (Nederlandsche Voetbalbond), the Dutch football federation, decided to take direct responsibility for the selection of the Dutch side, and the Derby der Lage Landen was born. Two weeks after the first official meeting in Antwerp (in which Belgium still fielded an English 'keeper, reportedly their best man on the day), a return match was held in Rotterdam, for which the director of a local newspaper, Cornelis Sijthoff, had offered a trophy, the silver Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad Beker.

The Vanden Abeele family withdrew its trophy in 1926 after the U.R.B.S.F.A. (Union royale belge des sociétés de football association, the Belgian football association, royal since 1920), had dared to move the match against the Netherlands from Het Kiel, the Beerschot ground and Olympic stadium in 1920, to the (newer and above all larger) Boschuil stadium of hated local rivals Antwerp. The president of the U.R.B.S.F.A., Comte d'Oultremont, then put the Coupe De Laveleye on offer for the winners of the annual fixture, a silver trophy that had been gathering dust at the federation's offices for more than a dozen years, having been won by the hosts on 23 November 1913 thanks to a 6-2 win over Germany in Antwerp and not contested since because of the Great War.

Matches

All matches held at the ground of Beerschot A.C., popularly known as "Het Kiel" (a quarter of Antwerp, south of the city centre), and the main football venue (as the newly built Olympisch Stadion replacing the old ground) at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp.

Notes:
[*1] After this match it was decided draws would not be followed by extra time
anymore; in case of a draw after 90 minutes, the holders retained the cup.
[*2] At the matches on 31 August 1920 (Olympic semifinal) and 15 May 1921 (held
to celebrate the silver jubilee of the U.R.B.S.F.A.,) the trophy was not on
offer; thus, they are not part of the series.
[*3] At the post-match banquet, Comte d'Oultremont, the president of the Belgian
football association, handed the trophy to Dutch captain Dénis in recognition
of the Dutch performance in the match.
[*4] Last match contested for the trophy (and the first in which the hosts failed
to score) as in 1926 the U.R.B.S.F.A. moved the match to the Boschuil stadium
of Antwerp F.C. (hated with a passion by Beerschot fans, whose football side
was created in 1900 by luring fifteen players from the older club).

included several guest players as well.

for a Belgian "Student XI" at the 1900 Olympics in Paris (alongside,
among others, Renier and Spanoghe), thus becoming the first ever Dutch
    football player at the Olympics.
