This trophy was donated by Nigerian company Joe Allen & Co, hence the title; it was played for on eight occasions between Nigeria and Gold Coast (the current Ghana), the venue alternating between the two countries.
After the final edition in 1959, last winners Gold Coast kept the trophy. The tournament was then replaced by the Nkrumah Cup, featuring additional West African nations. Ghana vs Nigeria encounters were continued in the Azikiwe Cup from 1965 onwards.
