New Zealand - Brown Shield History

It was on 16 August 1890 that the first interprovincial game in New Zealand was decided. Canterbury entertained Wellington at Christchurch and won 2–0. In the following season a return fixture was played at Newtown Park, Wellington, and a delighted crowd applauded the home team's 1–0 victory. Robert Brown, a whisky merchant from Glasgow, in New Zealand on business, saw the game, and at a function that evening said he would present a shield for competition among the provinces. This became The Association Football Challenge Trophy, generally known as the Brown Shield.
It has a unique place in the history of the NZ Football Association as the original inter-association trophy but more significantly the gift was the motivating factor for the inauguration of the Association.

From 1892-1925 the Brown Shield was the premier award in domestic football but on the presentation of The Football Association Trophy the Shield was allocated for competition amongst the "minor" associations of the North Island and is still contested on that basis.

In 1926 the Football Association Trophy (English Trophy) became the premier domestic award. The main centres became ineligible to compete for the Brown Shield. As a result the shield lost its importance.

South Auckland and Poverty Bay as the first two challengers in 1926 met to decide the first holder. South Auckland won 4- 0.
