Games of the XXI. Olympiad

Football Tournament

(Montreal, Canada, 18th - 31st July, 1976)

additional details

FIRST ROUND

NB: Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia all withdrew as part fo a general African
boycott against the participation of New Zealand (whose rugby team
planned a summer tour of South Africa in spite of the Soweto massacre
in June 1976). As the boycott decision was taken a day before the
start of the Games, they were not replaced, and so the football
    competition involved only 13 teams.
Earlier (on June 8th), Uruguay had withdrawn and were eventually
replaced by Cuba (after Argentina had declined the invitation to
    replace Uruguay).
