NB:     The second division consisted of five groups of 8 clubs.  The five
        group winners: Cádiz CF, RC Deportivo, Real Murcia, Levante UD
        and Donostia San Sebastián played a promotion league, won by
        Real Murcia who thereby won automatic promotion.  Runners-up
        RC Deportivo played off against RC Celta (10th in the first
        division) for another place.

        Real Oviedo did not play in the first division 1939/40 due to the
        poor condition of their field at Buenavista after the Civil War.
        It was decided to allow Real Oviedo one season to improve their
        pitch, automatically allowing them to play in the first division
        in 1940/41.  For the open place in the first division in 1939/40
        a playoff between Atlético Aviación (in 1936, Atlético de Madrid)
        and Atlético Osasuna, the two teams relegated after the 1935/36
        season was organized.  Atlético de Madrid won 3-1.
