1936-37 In 1937 the National League (Millî Küme) was introduced by the Turkish Football Federation. The top two placed clubs from the İzmir League qualified for the national championship. However, in 1937 the strongest clubs in İzmir had to merge in order to form competitive teams for the newly introduced National League. As the orders came from the İzmir governor and mayor, the clubs had no choice but to fulfill the request. After the conclusion of the 1936-37 season Altay, Altınordu, and Yüce formed Üçok. Göztepe, İzmirspor, and Egespor formed Doğanspor. Karşıyaka and Bornova formed Yamanspor. Üçok and Doğanspor were admitted to the 1937 National League. 1950-51 Altay won the championship title and qualified for the 1951 Turkish Football Championship. The Turkish Championship was held as top-level national championship for the last time in 1951. Since the Turkish Football Federation introduced professionalism in that year and the İstanbul League became professional, the amateur second teams of the İstanbul clubs participated in the Turkish Championship. Hence the Turkish Football Championship can no longer considered to be first level from 1952 onward. Kayagücü were renamed Karagücü. 1955-56 In 1955 the İzmir League became professional, changing its name to İzmir Professional Football League. Since military clubs cannot become professional by Turkish law, they could no longer participate in the professional divisions. All 10 clubs of the İzmir Professional League participated in the 1956-57 Federation Cup, which was held as a national championship. 1958-59 The 1958-59 season was the last one the İzmir League was played as a first level competition, since the professional nationwide league called Millî Lig (National League) was introduced in 1959.
