Uruguay - Torneo Departamental de Maldonado

overview file

From 1951 to 1979 it was played between the best teams from each Regional League from the department of Maldonado (Capital, San Carlos, Zona Oeste and Aiguá).

In 1980 the best teams from 1979 qualified to the Torneo Departamental, that from then started working as Maldonado's First Level, with promotions and relegations from the Regional Leagues.

Finally, since 1985 the Championship returned to it's original format, being eliminated in the mid 90's.

Torneo Federal

On 19th April 1995 the leagues from Maldonado (Capital) and San Carlos founded the Liga
Mayor de Fútbol.
Since the tournaments were unified, the Torneo Departamental was no longer necessary,
and both leagues stopped playing it.
However, teams from Aiguá and Zona Oeste started playing a new tournament called
Torneo Federal, to decide the team that would represent the Ligas Federadas de Maldonado
(Sector Interior) in the Copa El País. Apparently the first two years the minor teams
from the city of San Carlos also participated.
