USL (United Soccer Leagues, Inc.) has a complex history, starting in 1986 as an indoor league (Now I-League). Outdoor soccer (USL-PDL) added 1989. Pro division (now USL-D3Pro) added 1994. Select League added 1996. Select league absorbed the independent A-League and adopted its name in 1997. W-League added 1995. League itself has been known by several names over the years - from Southwest Indoor Soccer League (SISL: 1986-1989) to Sunbelt Independent Soccer League (1990-1991) to United States Interregional Soccer League (1992-1994) to United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (1995-1998).
***USA and NPSL I merged to form the NASL in 1968. Info on both leagues are in NASL.
****MISL was known as the NPSL II (National Professional Soccer League) from 1990-2001 (when it absorbed the WISL and as the AISA (American Indoor Soccer Association) from 1984 to 1989.
