England - FA Trophy Finals 1970-2003

The FA Trophy started in 1970 as the main silverware non-league
teams would be able to compete for. Despite being eclipsed
initially by the FA Amateur Cup, the competition soon gained
in popularity as the FA abolished the distinction between
amateur and professional teams in 1974. Over 300 teams played
in the cup the following season, but the number was steadily
being brought down until in 1991 the low mark was hit with
only about 120 teams. The setup was initially with 32 teams
in the first rounds producing four semifinalists after
four rounds. In 1999 the Trophy was remodelled after the manner
of FA Cup and FA Vase (128 teams with six rounds to semifinal).
Teams were also given byes until later rounds based on the league
they play in (currently all Conference teams get byes to round 3).

Three clubs have won the Trophy three times, however
only Woking have a clean finals appearance record. They and
Scarborough have won the Trophy twice in a row. Forest Green
Rovers was the first team to stage in both FA Vase and FA
Trophy finals. They were followed by Tamworth in 2003.
