After the abolishment of the Copa Merconorte and the Copa Mercosur, a Pan-American club cup was planned (Copa Pan-Americana 2002) but failed to be organised. Instead a tournament restricted to South American clubs was established. In 2005, clubs from Mexico and the United States were admitted.
