   Augustians (Bathurst)

 1 Arrance (Bathurst) [before independence]

[*] in 2005, an article by Nanama Okocha Keita in a Gambian newspaper
stated Wallidan won 16 championships, 13 of the 14 listed above
(1973/74 is not included in his list) and those of 1980/81, 1981/82
    and 1999/00.
At least the latter must be mistaken as contemporary newspapers
stated the league was won by Real who also played the Super Cup final
against cup winners Steve Biko; the 1980/81 and 1981/82 titles were
won by Starlight and Ports Authority according to [Oli 92], and the
title of Ports Authority in 1981/82 appears to be confirmed by their
participation in the African Champions Cup 1982/83 (no Gambian team
entered 1981/82, but Wallidan only entered the Cup Winners Cup that
season). (An article from the same author in 2008 attributed the 1982
title to Ports Authority, together with their 4 other titles listed
above.) The 1973/74 league title for Wallidan is again according
to [Oli 92] (though Real entered the 1975 African Champions Cup).
However, Wallidan may have won the league championship in some
of the years for which no champions are known (alternatively, the
league may not have been held or finished). [Oli 95] lists 8
consecutive titles for Wallidan from 1985 to 1992 but in at least two
seasons (1988/89 and 1990/91) the league title was certainly not
awarded and for several other seasons the situations is unclear.

[+] Gambia Ports Authority were established in 1973, taking the core
of its player base from Real de Banjul; around 1988/89, the club
ceased to exist and was replaced by Waterside FC, the club's feeder
team; in 1996(?), Falcons FC, which won the Banjul Nawettan, were
transformed to GPA FC, who gained promotion from the 3rd division
to the 2nd; they returned to the 1st level in or around 1997 and
    won the league in 1998/99.
